A Tehachapi man went missing in North Vietnam in 1968; he’ll be honored with a bench dedicated in his honor on Nov. 11

About 50 years ago this month, a Tehachapi family heard from the U.S. Navy that their son, Lt. Gilbert Mitchell Jr., was no longer considered missing in action and was presumed dead.

Mitchell, who was born July 10, 1941, had been classified as MIA since March 6, 1968, when the Navy A6A Intruder fighter-bomber on which he served as navigator-bomber went down in the Haiphong Harbor area of North Vietnam. He was 26 years old.
